Venturing Crew 606 - Journey

 November 5, 2022 is OCBSA’s Day of Service where Scouts dedicate themselves to servicing their community. Crew 606 participate in Volunteer Day at Big Oak Canyon where they processed finished compost and used it to plant hundreds of seeds. They also gathered tinder, kindlings and firewood for EarthRoot’s upcoming classes on building campfires. 

Today on November 12th we participated in the bubble run. A 5 kilometer run, that’s almost 3 miles. Our crew is mostly divided on waking up so early. But even those who enjoyed waking up early admitted that it was quite cold. “It was definitely a run” says one of our junior members. To some of our members, it even seemed short. Despite its apparent length, the members of the crew were able to take in breathtaking scenery as they ran along the course while also getting absolutely soaked in bubbles at the checkpoints. The crew can definitely say that the bubble run lived up to its name. It had both bubbles and much of our crew actually ran it. Our members had different favorite parts, some enjoyed the run itself, whilst others enjoyed the bubbles and the free sports drinks. Overall, the crew had a good time and will definitely plan more runs in the future! — Enzo, Tyler, Thomas, Keira, Ethan, and Nicholas  

Mount Baden-Powell is an iconic Southern California hike named in honor of the founder of the Boys Scout movement, Lord Robert Baden-Powell.  As scouters, this hike is especially meaningful to us.  Crew 606 youth and Advisors completed the challenging 8 mile hike and was rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding Angeles and San Gabriel mountain ranges.  At the top, Crew President, Thomas, proclaimed, "we were able to conquer the mountain."  It wasn't an easy hike for sure!!  The youth had to deal with the cold temperatures, gusty wind, and a small amount of snow and ice on the trail.   Regardless, Tyler said it best, "The hike was really fun and pretty."  Enzo, added "you can see really far away."  Nicholas also enjoyed the hike and stated that “the hike was really nice and the view of the distant mountain was breathtaking.” The crew enjoyed a nice lunch while soaking in the beautiful views.  According to Crew Advisors, Ms. Fuk...

Back in early July, the Philmont Crews kicked off their Summer with a two-week-long backpacking trip in the beautiful backcountry of Philmont in New Mexico. It was a great trip! Although Summer has reluctantly faded away, our memories have not! Thanks to Mr. Chris Riebe who led and planned out the details of the trip for us. It all started with a sign-up email from 2020! It was then a series of meetings and training that followed to prepare everyone physically and mentally. Adult Leaders were HAT-trained and took additional Wilderness First Aid training to ensure that the Crews could be taken care of should an accident happen. We had formed two crews - one for the Boys and one for the Girls. Though with different itineraries, we did meet a few times! The monsoon weather pattern of Philmont should be one of the factors that makes her magical. Every journey starts with a vision....for adventure, for fun, for friendship, or for memories that will last a lifetime.  Day 0 of the Kodiak Challenge, the youth learned about what is a vision, what are values, and tying them together to form a shared vision.  This is critical for the success of the Kodiak Challenge because without a shared vision; a common goal, there is no team.  Instead, it's a group of individuals.  "Vision is a doable dream, a distant goal that’s worth pursuing because it involves growth and success and provides the binding energy to bring a team together to accomplish great things." This winter, Crew 606 will embark on an adventure to do a thru hike of the Trans-Catalina trail. It's a 38-mile trek across the entire span of the island. But this is not just a backpacking trip!! It's the Kodiak Leadership Challenge!! What is the Kodiak Challenge? Let me tell you.... The Kodiak Challenge is an adventure that will push the boundaries of youth in crew who are ready for a leadership challenge in an adventurous outdoor environment. Crew members will practice and improve his or her leadership skills while on a journey backpacking across Catalina Island on the Trans-Catalina Trail. It is an experience—but one that has its underpinnings in the application of the leadership skills they learned in the Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troop (ILST) or Crews (ILSC), National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT), and/or National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE). It is, as is all of Scouting, AN ADVENTURE WITH A PURPOSE.
